What to do when your home loses power:

It’s a dreary, stormy day in Tacoma; the first of many for this fall and winter. We’re not expecting any power outages anytime soon, but there’s no time like today to prepare yourself! Check out the video below for tips on what to do when your home loses power.

Here are some power outage safety tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Turn off and unplug all unnecessary equipment.
  • Do NOT use an emergency generator inside the house.
  • Turn off any appliances you were using when the power went out.
  • When the power comes back on, surges or spikes can damage equipment.
  • Leave one light on so that you’ll know when the power comes back on.
  • Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours.
  • An unopened and full freezer will keep food cold for 48 hours.
  • First use perishable food from the refrigerator, then from the freezer.
